    February Luncheon

    "Q & A with Art Gilliam"

Join us as we hear from Art Gilliam, president of Gilliam Communications and owner of WLOK FM105/1340 AM, the first black-owned and first locally owned radio station in Memphis. Art will discuss the Memphis history of African-American radio, African-American history, and the changing media landscape.

Born in Nashville, Art attended Yale University at 16 for Economics. He earned an MBA from the University of Michigan before returning to Tennessee. In 1968, he began a weekly editorial for The Commercial Appeal, and was hired by WMC-TV as the weekend news anchor. Art was the first African-American to write for The Commercial Appeal and the first African-American on-air reporter and anchor in Memphis.

In 1977, he bought WLOK radio station, the first African-American-owned radio station in Memphis. The station is known for sponsoring the annual WLOK Stone Soul Picnic and was recognized as a Tennessee Historical Landmark. He has received the Black History Men of Honor Leadership Award, the Gospel Bridge Lifetime Achievement Award, the Rainbow/PUSH Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, the Memphis Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award, and the Downtown Memphis Commission’s Visionary Award.

Art has served on the boards of the Memphis Advertising Federation, the Society of Entrepreneurs, Memphis Zoo, Inc., and Lemoyne-Owen College. He was the chairman of the Black Business Association of Memphis, and was an advisory board member of the University of Memphis College of Communications. His book, "One America: Moving Beyond the Issue of Race," was published in 2014.
