Why should PR & Communications professionals pursue the APR?
Every step of the process makes you better at the work. The APR forces you to move from tactician to strategist, grounding your counsel in research, ethics, and measurable objectives instead of instinct alone. It changes how clients and leadership see you at the table. I use RPIE and APR frameworks in my client work every single day. The credential is the recognition; the discipline is the reward.
How was your experience preparing for the APR?
My experience preparing for the APR was humbling but transformative. This was a retake for me, so I knew exactly where I fell short the first time. Instead of re-reading everything, I got strategic. Preparing for the APR made me a sharper practitioner, not just a better test-taker.
What advice would you give anyone currently preparing for the APR exam?
Give yourself real practice conditions, not comfortable ones. The exam is three hours of heavy reading and scenario questions, so build your stamina before test day. Know RPIE cold. Don't just memorize frameworks; learn to distinguish them. And if you don't pass the first time, use your score report as a roadmap. My weakest sections became my strongest because I attacked them directly.
